Tokyo Outer Ring Road Main Tunnel Contracts Totaling 531 Billion Yen Awarded to Four Consortia; Kajima, Shimizu, Obayashi and Taisei

Four contracts of tunneling works for the Tokyo Outer Ring Road were awarded to consortia led by Japan’s four top builders, Kajima, Shimizu, Obayashi and Taisei. The expressway, one of the biggest projects in recent years, consists of a pair of 16 km tunnels with 16m diameter.
The north section of the south bound tunnel was awarded to a group led by Kajima Corp. at 141.2 billion yen, while its southern section to a group of Shimizu Corp and others at 113.8 billion yen. These two contracts are sponsored by East Nippon Expressway Company.
Central Nippon Expressway Company will commission the north section of the north bound tunnel to a consortium led by Obayashi Corp. and the contract value is 151 billion yen. The south section was awarded to a group led by Taisei Corp. at125.4 billion yen.
The contractors were selected by open and competitive biddings on March 17. The contracts were concluded on April 3. The construction works are expected for completion in five to six years. (2014/04/04)
