East Japan Railway completed the news station in Minato-ku, Tokyo called “Takanawa Gateway Station”on JR Yamanote Line and Keihin Tohoku Line. The station building is made of 630,000 m3 domestic produced timber on pillars and walls along with the steel frame. The building is characterized by its traditional Japanese features such as the origami-like roof of white membranes. The heat reflecting membranes can bring natural lights and reduce energy consumption for the lighting. The 30th station on Yamanote Line will open on March 14. It will become the gateway to the new development area to be launched in 2024. The 7,600m2 station building was designed by architect Kengo Kuma and constructed by contractors Obayashi and Tekken. JR East will introduce new technologies and features including autonomous moving robots for security, cleaning and guidance and the new type of ticket machines. (2020/03/11)
