Japanese cabinet approved on June 3 the basic plan and the action plan for national resilience, aiming to prepare for building collapse, fire, and tsunami caused by large-scaled earthquakes. The action plan provided targets such as 90% of all buildings in Tokyo and surrounding regions to be transformed to quake resisting buildings and 66% of the Pacific coastline to be protected by dikes. The government will focus on securing the budget and supporting private sectors and local governments with necessary measures. The basic plan is to be renewed every five year and the action plan is subject to yearly review.
Land Minister Ohta said after the cabinet meeting that considering 40% of all the necessary actions are the ministry’s responsibilities, the fiscal 2015 budget for the ministry’s public works should be appropriated for measures such as anti-disasters, rehabilitation and maintenance of aging infrastructure and quake resisting.
