East Japan Railway Company announced that it will build a new station between Shinagawa and Tamachi on Yamanote Line, which runs in a circle in central Tokyo. President Tetsuro Tomita of the company revealed at the press conference on June 3 the plan to start operation of the new station by 2020 when the Olympic Games will be held. The station, along with redevelopment in the surrounding area is expected to become the vibrant gateway to the capital, said Tomita.
The station will be built in the longest stretch of 2.2km between stations of Yamanote Line. Two platforms will be constructed in between four rails of Yamanote Line and its parallel-running Keihin Tohoku Line. The 10-15ha surrounding space, where facilities such as rolling stock yards will be cleared off in the coming time, is planned to be developed into multi use high rises including offices, retailers, hotels and residences in the period of next 10-15 years.
