Tokyo-based developer Mitsubishi Estate is constructing the TOKYO TORCH mixed-use complex in front of Tokyo Station including a 390-meter-high skyscraper that will be the tallest building in Japan when completed. Shimizu Corporation has been selected as the preferred bidder for the construction of Torch Tower. Shimizu Corporation will also be responsible for demolition of the two existing buildings, with the aim of starting construction of the new building in 2023 and completing it in 2027. The construction cost has not been disclosed.

Torch Tower is a 63-story building with four basement levels, totaling approximately 540,000 square meters. When completed, the tower will be the tallest building in Japan, surpassing 300-meter Abeno Harukas (about 300 meters) in Osaka, and the main tower of Toranomon-Azabudai Project in Tokyo (about 330 meters, scheduled for completion in 2023) being constructed by Mori Building.

The building will have office floors from the 7th to 53rd floors. The third basement to the sixth floor will be occupied by stores, and the third to sixth floors will be occupied by a hall that can host MICE events. The upper floors will include an observatory and a hotel, as well as 50 condominiums.

The overall project consists of a cluster of facilities totaling approximately 740,000 square meters. The construction of the 146,000-square-meter Tokiwabashi Tower was completed in June last year, and the 30,000-square-meter Zenigame-cho Building was completed in March this year. With the start of construction of the Torch Tower, the project will enter its final phase. (2022/05/30)
