Prime Minister Fumio Kishida attended the ASEAN Summit held in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on November 12. He confirmed the strengthening of cooperative relations toward development of "quality infrastructure" advocated by Japan. Later on the same day, he met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and announced that Japan would provide approximately 7.4 billion yen in official development assistance (ODA) as grant aid to Cambodia. The grant will support the construction of a water treatment plant and other projects.
At the ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Kishida announced that the government would support the following issues: 1) connectivity support, including high-quality infrastructure investment; 2) health, climate change countermeasures, and disaster prevention; 3) supply chain resilience, and strengthening of digital technology and food security; and 4) maritime traffic safety.
In the area of exporting high-quality infrastructure, PM Kishida reported on its support for major projects, including ODA loan project of the Patimban Port Development Project, which is underway in eastern Jakarta, Indonesia. He also reported on the activities of the ASEAN-Japan Smart City Network, an assistance framework for development of smart cities.
Prime Minister Kishida also met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. The grant aid totaled 7 billion 398 million yen for the following four projects: - expansion of the water supply system in Phum Prek, construction of the training complex and the outreach facility of Cambodian Mine Action Centre, improvement of infectious waste management, and provision of equipment for the cyber security system.
