Japanese trading company Sumitomo Corporation, Tokyo-based construction company Kumagai Gumi, and steel maker JFE Steel Corporation have decided to use green steel, which significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions in the manufacturing process, for a new office building to be built in Tokyo in an effort to decarbonize the entire supply chain.
The project, Suidobashi PREX, to be developed by Sumitomo Corporation in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, will be a 10-story steel structure with offices, shops, and a parking lot. Kumagai Gumi will be in charge of design and construction, and construction is scheduled to begin in December and be completed in March 2025.

The green steel is called “JGreeX” developed by JFE Steel, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions in the manufacturing process by allocating the amount of reduction generated by CO2 emission reduction technology to steel material in the "mass balance" method. This is the first application of this technology in the real estate and construction industry and will be used for approximately half of 400 tons of main steel frames. The companies will continue their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from building materials throughout the supply chain to achieve carbon neutrality. (2023/10/03)
