Craft trainees from Vietnam are striving at a construction site in Ginza, Tokyo in a bid to acquire Japanese advanced engineering skills. Taisei Corp, a Design/Build contractor and subcontractors such as Mukai Corp. have been cooperating in giving training on the job upon consent of relevant entities including an owner. The companies consider the project to be a model for accepting trainees from Vietnam.
The model project is organized by a council of general contractors, subcontractors, and industry groups. The council intends to develop more Vietnamese crafts who are familiar with Japanese construction, hoping to hire the Japan-trained workers who return home for infrastructure development in Vietnam.
Taisei Corp. prepared for months before the trainees’ arrival in January to welcome them. Careful preparations such as administrative works and detailed working rules were necessary because it was the first model project, said a manager of Taisei. The company provided documents such as training textbooks and operating manuals in Vietnamese. To motivate workers and trainees, signs in Vietnamese are being set up at the site.
As they learned basic skills and the language at Vietnamese vocational school, the trainees can speak Japanese fluently and understand basic engineering technology, said the trainer.
Mr. Nguen Van Que, a trainee of Mukai Construction arrived in Japan in 2013, saying he wanted to learn accurate and quick technique in Japan. “A construction site in Japan is cleaner and safer than any other sites I’ve seen in Vietnam,” said Que. “When I return home, I want to work for a Japanese company where I can take advantages of my skills as well as contribute to the country’s development.”
After six months have passed since they start working, Vietnamese workers have made a good influence on the whole project as the workers are more conscious of safety, said Taisei’s official. The company plans to invite more trainees from Vietnam, aiming to create capable and lively working conditions as well as to contribute to development of international society. (2014/07/30)
