Big Renovation Needed for 50-Year-Old Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway

Large-scaled renovation will soon start at deteriorated Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway, part of which has been in use for more than 50 years. The expressway company i 5 sections that need to be taken care of immediately. The largest-ever renewal works such as bridge and floor slab replacement will be undertaken to regenerate the capital’s essential transport network.

A panel of experts developed an outline of renewal plans for the 300km expressways last December, which picked the most urgent five spots of total 8km and sections that require large-scaled structure repair totaling 55km long. The company estimates the cost at 626.2 billion yen.

Out of the five designated sections, the 1.7km Higashi Shinagawa Pier will take the lead, aiming at construction start in 2015. The pier, severely damaged by 50 year operation is to be renewed for the first time. Photo: Higashi Shinagawa Pier (2014/09/04)
