Japanese elevator and escalator manufacturers are looking to accelerate maintenance business in foreign markets especially emerging countries such as Southeast Asia. As it is not common they offer a package service from installation to management and maintenance in these countries, such companies as Mitsubishi Electric and Hitachi are seeking to establish a business model in which they are fully involved in every process of elevators and escalators installation.

In Japan, the makers are usually responsible for maintenance of their own equipment after installation, including 24 hour surveillance and emergency repairs. Management and maintenance are one of the most important profit-making sectors for the companies since the regular inspections are obliged by the law.

In emerging countries such as China, and Southeastern Asian countries, on the other hand, regulations vary and building owners have different ideas toward maintenance of their lifts. A Hitachi spokesperson said it is dependent on the cost whether owners choose another maintenance contractor over the original maker.

Though selection of maintenance service contractors is up to building owners, many of the Japanese companies consider contracting with authorized dealers that have expertise in their products most favorable. If managed properly, elevators are usually durable as long as 20-25 years, according to Mitsubishi. The companies are about to expand their maintenance business strategically into new markets, offering reasonable costs, services and high standard products to customers who want Japanese quality in every way.
