JFE Engineering Co. announced that it was awarded a design-build contract jointly with a local contractor of two bridges on the total 1,500km dedicated freight railway line in India. The company, which secured the 5 billion yen contract, intends to expand its business field further in the country.

The Indian government has planned a huge railway development costing 900 billion yen in total to link the nation’s capital and the economic center, Delhi and Mumbai as a part of “the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Initiative,” which Japan and India jointly developed. Japanese government pledged earlier to loan 450 billion yen to fund the first phase between Rewari and Vadodara.

The package awarded to a consortium of JFE Engineering and the local-based Gammon by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd includes engineering, procurement and construction services of two steel bridges in the section of Phase 1.

Another large-scaled freight line is under development in the northeast part of the country. Japanese construction businesses are seeking more opportunities to participate in the projects. (2014/10/28)
