Changi Airport Group (CAG) of Singapore awarded a contract to build a 130,000m2 mixed purpose facility and expand the Terminal 1 to a consortium of Japan’s Obayashi Corp. and a local contractor. The contract is valued at S$1.57 billion.

A joint venture of CAG and Capita Malls Asia, a major Singaporean shopping malls developer will build a dome-shaped structure named “Project Jewel” of a garden, a hotel and retail shops in the 3.5ha area in front of T1. Noted architect Moshe Safdie drew the design. The construction is scheduled to begin within the year and completion is due by the end of 2018.

Singapore announced a grand plan to expand the airport last year. When completed, the Changi airport will double the annual passenger capacity to more than 100 million. The Terminal 5 expected to become the world’s largest terminal building and the third runway will be added and extension of a subway line is planned as well. Japanese construction companies have already secured several orders of construction. (2014/11/20)
