Tokyo Station in Marunouchi district of Chiyoda-ku marked its 100 year anniversary on December 20, 2014. The East Japan Railway held the ceremony the day before at the station, where many guests from the nation and abroad celebrated a century long history of Japan’s central gate.

Since it first started service in 1914, the terminal station has been expanding lines running toward every direction nationwide. The current station has 28 lines and 14 platforms, serving 416,000 passengers every day.

The original station building was fully refurbished two years ago by a consortium of Kajima Corp, Shimizu Corp. and Tekken Corp. “Tokyo Station has taken steps with Japanese people as a symbol of the nation’s modernization,” said President of JR East Tetsuro Tomita at the ceremony. “I hope the station will become a center of the new era’s culture, information and business,” added Mr. Tomita.
