Japan’s Largest Construction Industry Group Announces Long Term Plan toward 2050, Encourages Measures to Secure Workforce

Japan Federation of Construction Contractors announced its long-term vision toward 2050 showing an ideal form of the industry and roles in the society to be played by the industry leaders. The construction market is projected to value at 54.9 – 62.1 trillion yen in 2025. The vision states the industry will need 900,000 new entry workers and productivity improvement by 10% to maintain the workforce.

The plan comprises several chapters; the market projection, roles of construction industry, an ideal state of the industry, alternation of generations and a roadmap toward revitalization of resilient industry.

The group also decided the target number of workers that needs to be secured in the future. As 3.28-3.5 million trade workers are estimated to be in demand, 770,000-990,000 new entry workers needs to be added to the workforce. Women are expected to fill 200,000 positions out of the total 900,000 newly entered laborers. The vision also urges the industry to save manpower equivalent to 350,000 workers by improving productivity. (2015/03/23)
