Parliamentary Secretary Keisuke Suzuki of Japan’s Infrastructure Ministry visited a construction site in Shinagawa, Tokyo, where technical trainees from Vietnam work. The designated model site for accepting construction interns aims to showcase capacity development of foreign workers who are expected to become leaders in their home countries.

The subcontractors hire 14 Vietnamese interns under the supervision of the prime contractor, Taisei Corp. The 5,474 m2 mix use building has been constructed since March 2014 and completion is due in March 2016. “Vietnamese trainees are now comprising about one third of all workers,” says Taisei Corp, praising their contribution to the team.

Mr. Suzuki discussed with the trainees and asked if they have intention to work more than three years, the permitted period of training. Some trainees, answering the question said they hope to extend their stay. Asked what the difference of construction between Japan and Vietnam are, they answered that Japanese construction is more mechanized than their home country. (2015/04/17)
