Japanese construction giant Taisei and Stanley Electric announced on May 26 that they developed energy-efficient, water-resistant light emitting diode (LED) lighting system for indoor vegetable factories, which enables to cut energy consumption by 64% from widely-used fluorescent lights.

The two companies have cooperated in development of technologies for vegetable factories since 2009. They offer integrated services and consulting including sales of cultivation units and assistance at the early stage of application.

As indoor vegetable cultivation has recently attracted increasing attention from many businesses, energy expenses of fluorescent lightings are major challenges. Though some companies apply LEDs with an aim to reduce the cost, conventional LEDs have yet to overcome problems such as energy efficiency and vulnerability to humidity. (2015/05/27)
