The organizing committee for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games awarded a contract to design a facility for gymnastics to Nikken Sekkei. The 183 million yen contract was signed on June 23. The facility comprising a 32,000 m2 gymnasium and a 5,000 m2 building for warm-ups will be built in a 10 ha space in Ariake, Koto-ku. The committee will hire a design-build contractor as the Nikken Sekkei’s basic design completes in fiscal 2016. While the candidature file submitted to International Olympics Committee in 2012 estimated a price tag at 8.9 billion yen, the construction cost is likely to rise due to recent material and labor cost hike.
