Japanese three expressway companies released a plan on January 22 that they will rehabilitate total 20,000 kilometer long expressways at 3 trillion yen in the coming 15 years. The estimated cost comprises 1.76 billion yen for 240 kilometer long renewal works and 1.26 billion yen for 1870 kilometer long repair works. The companies aim to undertake the construction in the early stage, discussing with the government and municipalities on matters such as funding and traffic restrictions.

40% of all roads managed by East, Central and West Nippon Expressway Company date back to more than 30 years ago. The plan was prepared based on a report by a joint advisory committee of the three companies. The expressway operators will also address development of appropriate inspection systems.
