Fukuoka Airport Building Company Ltd. announced on January 22 that it will redevelop the terminal buildings for domestic flights. The entire Terminal 1 and the south part of Terminal 2 will be removed and constructed in the adjacent area. Remaining part of Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 will be fully renovated. The renewed terminals will hold some 120,000 m2 total floor area with five stories above ground and two underground. Another 6-story building will also be built in the area to cover a shortage of the company’s office space. The main construction of the terminal buildings will start in April 2015. The work is scheduled for completion in March 2019, costing about 38 billion yen.

The new terminal will offer more efficient traffic lines of passengers, equipped with direct escalators from the subway level to check-in counters on the first floor and departure gates on the second. All departure and arrival functions, which are now located separately in different terminals according to airlines and destinations, will be centered in the building, while commercial retail space will be increased by 30%. The company will apply solar power generation and green roofs and walls. Azusa Sekkei Co., Ltd. is in charge of the design work, aiming to finish it in November. (2014/01/23)
