JFE Engineering Corp. announced on March 6 that it was awarded a contract to renovate a pier in Yangon, Myanmar, which makes the first ODA port development project implemented in Myanmar after the nation’s democratization in 2011. The 200 million yen contract is a part of Japan International Cooperation Agency’s technical assistance to the government of Myanmar.

The pier, used by more than 30,000 ferry passengers every day, has been deteriorated over several decades. JFE Engineering will remove the current structure and construct two floating piers and a terminal building. A joint venture established last year by the company and the Construction Ministry of Myanmar, named J&M Steel Solutions Company Limited is commissioned to make steel materials for the project.

The Japan’s leading steel engineering company aims to take advantage of the contract winning for enhancement of its business operation in Myanmar. It targets to record the overseas sales at 20 billion yen in fiscal 2016, increasing from 5 billion in 2013. (2014/03/07)
