Tokyo Metropolitan Government will launch a project to develop lively corners in the city, picturing Avenue of Champs-Elysees in Paris, France, which is known as the most beautiful street in the world. Easing regulations of use of Tokyo-owned public roads, the government aims to create bustling sidewalks, which is expected to promote urban development along the major streets.
The exceptional measure allowing occupying public road areas for commercial use in the special designated urban zones enables to open shops and restaurants including bike rentals on the sidewalks. The subject areas and streets are yet to be decided but Ring Road No.2 from Shimbashi to Toranomon slated to open to traffic on March 29 is said to be the potential district.
Governor Youichi Masuzoe said that he pictures it as a pedestrian-friendly street to welcome visitors in Tokyo. (2014/03/12)
