International Union of Architects, UIA announced that it will award Gold Medal to Japanese renowned architect Toyo Ito this year. Mr. Ito was the third Japanese winner of the prize following Fumihiko Maki in 1993 and Tadao Ando in 2005. The medal will be presented to the laureate in September at the UIA World Congress in Seoul, South Korea.
The UIA Gold Medal, established in 1984, honors living architects who have qualities and talents nominated from throughout the world every three years. Seoul-born Ito Toyo graduated from Tokyo University in 1965 and established his practice in 1971. Sendai Media Arch in Sendai, Japan and Taichung Metropolitan Opera House in Taiwan are among his important works. The 76 year-old architect was awarded Pritzker Award in 2013. (2017/08/01)
