Japanese Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Environment will accelerate promotion of sewer infrastructure export with an aim to introduce wastewater treatment to Asian countries. Asia Wastewater Management Partnership, AWaP, which will work on influencing the member nations to set development of sewerage system and domestic wastewater treatment tanks prioritized in their national strategy, is to be established by next summer. It is also targeted that Japanese technologies on quality water infrastructure should contribute to improvement of environment in the developing countries.

The establishment of AWaP was proposed by Japan to assist Asian nations to achieve the goal of reducing untreated wastewater by half by 2030 which was included in United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The countries to be taken part in the body are five Southeastern Asian countries besides Japan; Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines. The ministries will hold a preparatory workshop on December 13 in Yangon, Myanmar with attendance of officials of the member nations to discuss challenges and efforts in advance of the launch.
